Dog Named Delaware

After years with Sampson, I’m convinced that Doberman Pinschers are the ideal four legged companion – aggressive only in looks and loyal to neurosis (kinda like me). So, when Tony felt it was time to rear a new best friend he went on the hunt for a litter of Dobbies that was ready to roam. He found a breeder in Ohio and made the voyage today from W.V. to pick out his new pal among 3 fawn males. I wanted to get in good early so I sent our new addition a welcome basket equipped with biodegradable Business Bags, botanical puppy shampoo by SpaDog, Boulder Bits peanut butter treats, and two Spalding championship grade tennis balls (vintage 1980s found at the thrift store still in its vacuum sealed yellow tin, found the paw stickers there too – not as exciting but fortuitous). I also compiled a list of off-leash hikes in Colorado and a couple recipes for homemade dog food. Yep, we’re going the hippie parenting route. Now, to figure out how to compost his poop.

Here is a list of a few off-leash hikes in Colorado:
Maxwell Falls Trail
I-70 to Evergreen. From the stoplight on Highway 74 head south on Highway 73 for about a mile. Make a right on Brook Forest Rd. Drive for 3.6 miles to the lower trailhead parking in a small fenced area on the left side of the road.
Herman Gulch
The trail starts on an old sawmill road, located just west of Georgetown on I-70. The parking area and trailhead are located at the northeast corner of exit 218.
Elk Meadow Park
700 Jefferson County Parkway Golden, CO 80401
Take the second entrance: go west on Stagecoach Boulevard from hwy 74; proceed about 1 mile and you will see a sign. Park in the lot on the left (south).

And tips on making your own dog food:
All you need is three ingredients – a protein, a carbohydrate, and a vegetable. Roughly, you’ll want 1/3 of proteins to 2/3 of vegetables and carbs.
1/3 Organic Skinless Chicken or Ground Turkey/Beef or Organ Meat or Fish
1/3 Organic Brown Rice or Oatmeal or Pasta or Potatoes
1/3 Organic Green Beans or Carrots or Broccoli or Cabbage or Squash

First cook the meat & grain portions then combine all ingredients in a food processor. To supplement Calcium and Magnesium levels add unflavored yogurt, white cheese, cottage cheese, pulverized egg shells, or sardines.
+ Prepare dishes in advance and freeze in individual serving sizes.
+ Use your slow cooker!
+ To calculate portion size, multiply body weight in pounds by 16 to get weight in ounces. Feed 2-3% (x .02 for min. x .03 for max.) of that weight daily.
